Fluoride = Poison?

Kim Swain here and I have an experience to share.
I am always amazed at the astounding ignorance of Utah County citizens when it comes to the subject of water fluoridation. So I was at church this morning and one of the ladies in my ward told me that she can no longer fill her prescription for fluoride supplement tablets for her children at the pharmacy. Why?? Because almost every other area of the country except Utah County has fluoridated water and the extra supplements are no longer being produced.
I just find it ironic that the place with the highest concentration of Mormons in the entire world, the nucleus of super-moms is so ignorant and backwards on the subject of oral health. We are supposed to take care of childrens' physical well-being, right? And we have more kids here than almost anywhere. Yet, it's a government conspiracy and unsafe to add Fluoride to our public water sources. Even though it is the most cost effective cavity prevention and reaches the at risk population the best out of any method available. It is toxic and unnatural and they don't want it.
We all hear stories all the time about moms taking their kids to the dentist and finding out his teeth are rotting out of his head and the traumatic dental experiences that follow. Of course, putting fluoride in the water isn't a cure all but we all know many of those horrible experiences could be avoided if people here would just realize what the rest of the country has already figured out.
Ok, obviously this is a sore subject for me and gets me very irate and I just wanted to rate to people who understand what I'm talking about.

Fluoridation Opposition is Growing

New York -- October 19, 2008 -- Over 1300 additional professionals signed onto the Fluoride Action Network's (FAN) statement calling for an end to fluoridation as more evidence emerges to condemn fluoridation.

Now over 1,860 professionals urge Congress to stop water fluoridation and hold Congressional hearings, citing scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html

Since the first FAN August 2007 statement, the following has occurred:

-- The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation.

-- The National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” (1)

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. (2)

-- A qualitative review of studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ, conclude Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (e-published 8/10/08)

-- Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"

-- Dr. A. K. Susheela, a leading fluoride expert, explains in a video why US physicians overlook fluoride as a possible cause of diseases commonly caused by fluoride. http://tinyurl.com/Susheela

-- An expert panel Health Canada commissioned to study the risks of fluoride exposure says the government should cut the recommended amount in drinking water, encourage the use of low-fluoride toothpaste by children and have makers of infant formula reduce levels in their products. The panel recommended reduced fluoride exposure because it was worried children might be getting too much of the chemical.

Signers to the FAN statement include:

-- Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine

-- Vyvyan Howard, MD, PhD, President, International Society of Doctors for the Environment

-- Ken Cook and Richard Wiles, Environmental Working Group

-- Lois Gibbs, Center for Health, Environment, and Justice

-- Joseph Mercola, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, who runs the #1 most visited natural health website

-- Theo Colborn, PhD, co-author, “Our Stolen Future”

-- Sam Epstein, MD, Chairman, Cancer Prevention Coalition

-- The current and six past Presidents of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology

-- Board of Directors (2007), American Academy of Environmental Medicine

-- FIVE Goldman Prize winners - given for excellence in protecting the environment

-- Three members of the prestigious 2006 National Research Council (NRC) panel that reported on fluoride’s toxicology

-- Three officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters

-- Hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals, worldwide.

Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Arvid Carlsson says, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It's really obsolete.”

An Online Action Petition to Congress in support of the Professionals' Statement is available on FAN's web site, http://congress.fluorideaction.net and over 15,000 individuals have signed so far.

“The NRC fluoride report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks," says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network. "Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm in the NRC report,” he added.

The Professionals’ Statement also references:

-- The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula NOT be prepared with fluoridated water.

-- The CDC’s concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.

-- CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.

-- Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.

-- A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a DC watchdog, revealed that a Harvard professor concealed the fluoridation/bone cancer connection for three years. EWG President Ken Cook states, “It is time for the US to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it's as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”

Ok, I need to take a deep breath here. I am so fired up right now. I originally read this post by Kim and didn't have much of a reaction to it. I haven't had much experience with the fluoride debate here in TX.

But how did the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation find our happy little DH blog? I am not happy with the preceding comment. This coalition not only attacks fluoridation but the dental profession as a whole. This is what they have to say:

"Tooth decay: a sad national epidemic caused by lack of dentists who care and not a fluoride need. Extensive lobbying, political maneuvering and expensive public relations campaigns by organized dentistry sway legislators to add fluoride chemicals into public water supplies, 2/3 of which already are, to benefit those whom dentists neglect. Protecting their high-salaried monopoly, dentists lobby against dental groups offering quality, cheaper fixes. Fluoride product makers benefit most."

Right now, all I can remember is Mrs. Mecham saying that debating the anti-fluoridationists will reap no rewards. So I am holding my tongue.

But for the record, I do not appreciate this intrusion into our little blogging home.

Oh my gosh! I've had SO many granola mothers for patients that just tell me that fluoride is a poison! WHY?! I don't even argue with them, I just nod my head and laugh inside.

Yes, I have a problem with the NYSCOF commenting on our blog as well! What a bunch of....! I bet they surf the net looking for people who support fluoride. Anyway, I like how they say tooth decay is a result of uncaring dentists. Of course it has nothing to do with brushing and flossing your teeth!

Anyway, when I was working in Orem the guy who single handedly (?) removed the fluoridation issue from the elections was a patient at our office. It took all I had not to say something to him!

Who the hell are these nyscof guys?? I am so mad. I want to delete their comment. I feel violated. Here I am wanting to talk to my friends about a simple irritating experience and I get attacked with a bunch of garbage. But you are right it is useless to argue. And I also do not appreciate the intrusion.

Did anyone actually check the references they left? I checked the one with the kidney foundation (since it sounded like the only impartial one that had a website). They totally distorted what the article said. The kidney foundation does still support fluoridation, the only thing being questioned is the recommended EPA levels due to a rare bone condition that can be worsened...not caused...by excessive fluoride consumption. I read a couple of the other articles posted by the kidney foundation and it was all the same.
Just thought that was funny. These people are as bad as SUWA.
